- Friday,
11 April 2008, 8pm: A Little of What
You
Fancy (Vaudeville and Music Hall)

Songs and recitations from the great Victorian and Edwardian era of the
English Music Hall and the Vaudeville Stage. Murray Callahan, David Jones,
and Heather Wood will provide the bill of fare, with the
infamous Dr. Jerome
at the keyboard. Songs of entertaining sadness, of damsels in distress
(and even sometimes enjoying it), of a bit of bubbly and fine
comradeship, of all those things that made for popular entertainment in
a time a bit more simple it would seem than what songs are about today.
Our performers are as good as you can find these days at bringing out
the soul of this period, a twinkle and a tear in the eye, and the good
doctor will provide tasteful and sensitive
accompaniment. The performers will perform in an
approximation of the costume of the period,
and we invite the public to dress up for
the occasion. Make it an event, not just a concert.
Let’s recreate a grand old time, since we all know the old days were
much better than they actually were. Click on thumbnail to

- Friday, 16 May 2008, 8pm: Ian
Robb “a singer and
occasional writer of old songs”.
The
London, England - born singer and concertina player has spent the last
37 years playing concerts and festivals Canada
and the US, and in
that time has been "instrumental" in spawning a number of well-regarded
bands, including Hang the Piper, Finest Kind, Jiig, and has performed
often in duos, most recently with Alistair Brown.Ian's last recording,
“Jiig” earned him the 2005 Canadian Folk MusicAward in the
“Best Singer
– Traditional” category. Now residing in Ottawa, Canada, Ian
Robb's
roots are in the pub-based English folk club scene, and developed a
love for the old songs of that country and "new songs that sound
old". He also started a strong attachment to chorus songs and
harmony singing. Though Ian doesn't consider himself primarily a
songwriter, the handful of songs he has crafted, such as the pub anthem
"The Old Rose and Crown", have in many cases been adopted and sung all
over the world, often by people who assume them to be “real” folk
songs. Press release not yet available. Click on

Andy
Cohen grew up in a house with a piano and a lot of Dixieland Jazz
records, amplified after a while by a cornet that his dad got him. At
about fifteen, he got bitten by the Folk Music bug, and soon got to
hear records by Big Bill Broonzy and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, both of
which reminded him of the music he grew up to. At sixteen, he saw Rev.
Gary Davis, and his course was set. He knew he had it in him
to
follow, study, perform and promote the music of the southeast quadrant,
America¹s musical mother lode. Born in Massachusetts but a
Southern boy at heart, he is both entertaining and true to the
bone. His repertoire is largely from streetsinging geniuses
across
the South who spent the first half of the last century cadging among
passers-by for dimes. And although he has
published extensively on
certain regional aspects of guitar picking, it is plain that
he picks because it¹s fun. Andy has traveled around
the
U.S. and Canada for a generation and a half, collecting and playing
these songs and tunes. Like his instruments, and like
himself,
they show the patina of age and are energetically presented.
You
are invited to his website, www.andycohenmusic.net,
for a sample or two. ...press

- Friday
13
March, 2009, 7:30 p.m.: Housetop
concert at the West Side Arts Coalition, Broadway Mall Center Island at
96th and Broadway, N.Y.C.

Housetop is a harmony singin', swingin' string band quartet based in
Southern Vermont and here in New York City for a special appearance.
They perform a lively, quirky program of swingy, bluesy, old time
American music. Much of Housetop's repertoire is from the 30s and 40s
-a high point of American song writing as performed at the time by
stars like the Ink Spots, The Boswell Sisters, Fats Waller, and Fred
Astaire. It was a time of great musical craftiness: close harmonies and
clever, concise lyrics. It's also the music with which entertainers
strove to sing and dance the people's cares away, and there's an
undertone of hard times, treading the line between sincerity and
satire. In the irreverent spirit of Vaudeville, Housetop makes these
songs their own, along with whatever else scratches their itch,
including jug band tunes, songs penned by Bob Wills, Dan Hicks, the
Roches, and their own originals.
The group consists of Naomi Morse
(vocals, fiddle and mandolin), Erica Morse
(vocals and upright bass), Anna Patton
(vocals and clarinet), and Peter Siegel
(vocals, guitar and mandolin). Naomi Morse is an expressive soprano and
a fiery, lyrical fiddler whose rhythmic Vermont style sparks with
French Canadian and southern old-time influences. Erica Morse is an
expert singer, rendering jazzy harmonies with her rich, clear tone.
Drawing on a musical background of intensive study of the viola de
gamba and cello, these days she can often be seen thumping out a lovely
big fat tone on the upright bass. Anna Patton is a third generation
singer, musician and arranger of jazz vocal harmonies. An accomplished,
versatile clarinetist, Anna tours regularly, delighting audiences with
her command of numerous genres, her soulful style and her stunning
musicianship. Peter Siegel is a mainstay of the traditional dance scene
of the Pioneer Valley, as well as a composer and nationally-known
singer-songwriter. His unique brand of "space age vaudeville" features
hip-hop, finger style blues, fiddle tunes from Ireland, Quebec, New
England,Appalachia, swing, funk, and country songs with lots of
yodeling. They'll round out the program with hot instrumentals: Peter
and Erica set the groove for Anna and Naomi's wild renditions of raggy
fiddle tunes and little-big-band breaks. General Concert Admission $15;
Members, $12. Children and Full-time students $6. Info:

- Sunday
15 March, 2009,
2:00pm: Brian Peters blends his compelling voice
with his other instruments—guitar, Anglo concertina & melodeon.
He is a master of all these instruments. While he is
internationally known for his performance of traditional English
ballads, he is equally wonderful with instrumental dance tunes, ragtime
& blues. He gives homage to modern composers, such as
Richard Thompson, Leon Rosselson & Robin Williamson. His own
compositions are also well worth the hearing. His renditions of British
Music Hall songs are entertaining, as well. His act bristles with
energy & wit. Accompanying Brian will be Jeff Davis,
well known New England traditional folksinger. This will be
Brian’s only appearance in the New York metropolitan area during his
tour. This concert is being run by the Borderline Folk Music
Club and co-sponsored by the Pinewoods Folk Music Club.
Reservations are recommended e-mail to solz1@optonline.net or call Sol
Zeller at (845) 354-4586. Bring a cold pot luck dessert to
share with 4 people.

- Fri, April 17,
2009: John McCutcheon, 7:30pm
at
Community Church, 40 E. 35 St, Manhattan.
Concert
admission is $25 Members admission is $20. Children (under
18) are $10. John McCutcheon is a compelling singer whose
songs sing of
the nation’s heritage. His words channel the conscience of
our
people into streams of poetry and melody. He is an outstanding
instrumentalist, especially renowned for his hammerd dulcimer
playing. He performs original music and traditional folk
music
that he learned from the legendary figures of eastern
Kentucky.
John has made 31 recordings, has been nominated for six Grammys, toured
on every continent, and served as the president of Local 1000 of the
American Federation of Musicians. McCutcheon’s live
performances
have been described by critics as “little feats of magic,”
“breathtaking in their ease and grace...” Before graduating
summa
cum laude from Minnesota’s St. John’s University, this Wisconsin native
literally “headed for the hills,” forgoing a college lecture hall for
the classroom of the eastern Kentucky coal camps, union halls, country
churches, and square dance halls. His apprenticeship with
many of
the legendary figures of Appalachian music embedded a love of not only
home-made music, but a sense of community and rootedness. The
result is music – whether traditional or from his huge catalog of
original songs – with the profound mark of place, family, and strength.

- Saturday 25 September: Sharon Katz and the
Peace Train at Peoples’ Voice Café (co-sponsored by
FMSNY); 8 pm
Sharon
created a large multiracial musical group in her native South Africa in
1992 and traveled throughout the country by train to promote the first
free elections. She and her Freedom Train group went on to
tour
Africa, the United States and Europe, recording with Sting, Paul Simon,
Elton John, and other artists. In the U.S. crowds respond to
her
uplifting songs: staccato, twinkling notes fly from the frets of her
guitar, maintaining a muscular rhythm: an uplifting aural swirl of
funk, jazz and African folk music. Those of you who were at
our Spring
Weekend will remember her electrifying performances. At the
Community

- Friday 17 June: Happy Traum, 2011
in concert. 8 p.m.

Happy Traum began playing guitar and 5-string banjo as a teenager, and
was an active participant in the legendary Greenwich Village folk scene
of the 1950s and ‘60s. Since then he has performed extensively
throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, and Japan, both as a
soloist and as a member of various groups. His avid interest in
traditional and contemporary music has brought him recognition as a
performer, writer, editor, session musician, folklorist, teacher, and
recording artist.
Perhaps Happy's most important and lasting musical contribution has
been Homespun Tapes, which he and his wife Jane founded in 1967. This
dynamic and growing company has a catalog of more than 500 music
lessons on DVD, videotape and CD, and their products are sold around
the globe. Taught by top professional performing musicians, the lessons
cover a wide variety of instruments and musical styles. Happy produces
all of the lessons, and brings to Homespun over 40 years of experience
as a guitarist, performer, writer, teacher, and popular member of the

- Saturday, 28 February 2009, 8 pm DOUBLE TROUBLE
20th Anniversary House Concert. Jean Farnworth and
Evy Mayer
were already solo performers when they started performing as Double
Trouble in 1989. Evy sings and plays ukulele, guitar, dumbek and other
percussion instruments, and collects popular songs of the early 1900’s
as well as rounds, humorous songs, world music, singer/songwriter and
children’s music. Jean sings and plays Celtic harp (32 strings, 45”
tall), and 12-string guitar. She includes Renaissance, traditional
Celtic music, vintage blues, as well as songs she has written, in her
repertoire. It is easy to see why “What kind of music do you play?” can
be a difficult question for Double Trouble to answer. Lyrical and
haunting on one song, and boisterous on the next, they handle their
instruments with authority and project their voices with beauty and
clarity. Twisted, yet sensitive; multi-cultural; extremely
dangerous. This duo will get everyone singing by inviting the audience
to join in on choruses. FMSNY members $12, non-members $15, children
and F/T students $6,. In Brooklyn -- Reservations suggested. (718)

- Thursday, 17 September: Gwilym Davies, Carol
Davies, and Terry Brenchley

This
talented trio of British Folk Artists will be back in the USA this
fall. Terry Brenchley fiddle, Gwilym and Carol Davies
melodeon,
concertina, pipe & tabor, banjo and keyboard, and some fine
vocal
harmonies. The trio bring to their music a rare background of
research into traditional music and song. Gwilym lived in the
USA
in the 1990s, and did some folksong collecting in the Appalachian and
Adirondack Mountains. His recordings have been placed in the Library of
Congress. Terry now resides in Britttany, where he has made a
special study of Breton and other French folk tunes. Be prepared for a
fine evening of English, Welsh, American and even some continental
European songs and tunes. Seating is limited
so register quickly for this house concert to be held on the upper West
Side (98 St). Call 212-662-6575 for reservations.

- Saturday, 28 February, 2009: Blues Guitar
Workshop w/
Andy Cohen, 2:30-5pm, ADVANCE REGISTRATION
REQUIRED!
This
is an intermediate level workshop. It will be helpful for
participants to have an understanding of finger-picking with an
alternating bass. Andy will go into detail about playing
blues
with and without an alternating thumb-bass while finding melody notes
with finger or thumb, going up and down the neck, how syncopation
works, and several other guitaristic secrets. He will walk the
participants through a couple of complete songs and (without promising
miracles) leave them with an ability to knowledgeably understand and
play blues guitar.

Andy Cohen is a truly amazing blues guitar
player and singer, and has given countless concerts and
workshops. He grew up hearing Dixieland jazz and “got bitten
by
the folk bug.” At sixteen, he saw Rev. Gary Davis,
and his
course was set. He knew he had it in him to follow, study, perform and
promote the music of the southeast quadrant, America¹s great musical
fountainhead.

Paul Kaplan
is
a super-talented singer/songwriter, with a fine repertoire of
serious and funny songs -- he has a rare gift for writing and
singing songs in the old troubadour tradition. He has been an
enthusiastic participant in the folk music world since the late 1960s
when his early anti-Vietnam war songs were published in the protest
magazine Broadside. He has appeared at numerous festivals and
his
songs have been recorded by such artists as Sharon, Lois, and Bram,
Claudia Schmidt, and Jay Ungar and Molly Mason as well as on his own
albums. He and Dan Milner authored the book The Bonny Bunch
of
Roses, a compilation of traditional music of England, Ireland &
Scotland. Paul's Website including song samples
Sharon Katz
created
a large multiracial musical group in her native South Africa in 1992
and traveled throughout the country by train to promote the first free
elections. She and her Freedom Train group went on to tour

Ralph
Bodington
is
a superb performer of banjo tunes and ballads from the old-time
Southern mountain tradition. Ralph is deeply respected by
musicians who have devoted their lives to Southern Mountain
Music. A 2009 tour introduced him to audiences in Britain who
were as enthusiastic as those who have flocked to his performances at
the New England Folk Festival and the Eisteddfod.
His newly
released CD, Old Paint is treasured by musicians & singers.

Heather
Wood
is
a veteran singer from the English revival for some 40+ years, dating
from her days with The Young Tradition. She has a great repertoire
of ballads, historical songs, love and agricultural
songs,
and a lot from the humorous side. In addition to the old songs, she has
written some dynamite new ones. ...

Ted Crane
Ted
has been organizing weekly dances in Ithaca, NY, his hometown
and
a hotbed of Old-Time and Celtic music, since the early 1980s.
These musical influences fed Ted's interest[is]in the
energetic
rhythm of dancing and music. His characteristic style, a high-energy
fusion of dry New England calls with lively, rapid patter, follows the
flow of the music as it fuels the dancers. He composes, "dances with a
difference," often crafted to a specific tune, yet grounded in
traditions that allow them to blend with all kinds of music. His dances
feel good to dancers.. Ted's website
